Snow Peak was founded in 1958 as a metal wholesaler by Yukio Yamai, the father of current president Tai Yamai.

Sanjo City, located near the center of Niigata Prefecture, has been a prosperous town with a developed metal industry since ancient times, and it is an area that specializes in metal processing. The founder, Yukio Yamai, is a mountaineer who loves mountains. When he climbed Mt. Myoko with his companions, he was deeply moved by the sense of accomplishment after reaching the summit and the magnificent view from the top.

However, at that time, there was a shortage of rock climbing equipment suitable for climbing Japanese mountains on the Japanese market, and they could only be purchased at high prices from abroad. Yukio was dissatisfied because there was no equipment on the market that he wanted to use, so he simply designed the pitons and crampons he needed, and took them to the blacksmith's house to ask a blacksmith to make them for him.

As soon as the trial sample was completed, Yukio took it to the rock climbing site for field testing. The practice of repeated testing until satisfied was greatly improved the precision of the equipment, and this is also an important process in producing genuine products. Soon after, the rock climbing equipment made by Yukio became a commercial product and received high praise in the market. The "hypothesis-verification" development model of Snow Peak's creative spirit is still passed down to this day.
